"It's lucky I'm in a band. I'd be obnoxious as a solo artist." — Bono

by Christopher Trimm

This was the first concert I ever went to. I had heard NYD and Two Hearts on MTV but other than that had no clue on what was coming. I'll always remember watching the sprint to the stage after entering the arena because there was only one line to the GA floor (I think it was a mile long). Bono said that we want to make this arena into a small room...(ha!) Bono said that they had played a huge field two weeks ago (US festival). There was a lapse after this gig of five days so we had a more exuberant U2 on stage I would say. As always we were told to move back because of the crush in front. My friend Erich (it's all his fault) was at the barrier in front of Edge and had paint bleed through his four shirts. Fortunately they were black to begin with! I had to wrest myself away from the teeming masses and it was sure nice that Bono decided to stretch the stage to where I was standing during Electric Co. so I could catch his foot when he jumped 20 ft from the loge level. He lost his shirt while being passed back to the stage but other than that looked fine! I convinced myself that this probably doesn't happen every night. The two people with us who went the the Hollywood Palladium the year before confirmed that this gig would be remembered for that jump. "I Fall Down" was the next song :-) When I left that night I knew that I would see U2 for many more times.
