"What a city! What a night! What a crowd! What a bomb! What a mistake! What a wanker you have for President!" — Bono, in Paris, on Jacques Chirac, 1995

by Tobias Green

U2. Boy this band has been taking it's lumps lately. In the kingdome, I saw my favorite band get up on stage and play to a 85 percent full stadium. They put their hearts into the show but it just didn't happen. I have a unique perspective because I saw them in Eugene and I saw them on Showtime and now in the Kingdome.

Bono came out with his newly-christened bald head. (Get your hair back) U2 played their regular set list and offered some surprises by playing Stand by me. Dissapointing though, because nobody in Seattle knew the words to the song. "Is this Las Vegas," Bono asked disgustedly. Then during the emotional and well played "Please", Bono tried to get the crowd to sing the main phrase "Please, Please, get up off your knees." Again to no avail. Even a oldie like "40" could not bring the crowd to sing along.

It was sad to see that most of the fans in attendance were not long time U2 fans. Bono hinted at the future saying it will be something different. Something smaller in scope-good move. I have heard the papers exclaim the death of U2 as a band. NO, it is not U2 that was dying it is heartfelt music that is. In Europe, U2 is still kings. In the US, they will have to fight for the ground they lost this time around.
