"I guess I did my grieving for my father, keening, in front of 20,000 people singing U2 songs. They really carried me, those songs and my three mates." — Bono

by Steve Thompson

This is now the second time that I have seen U2 in concert, the first beeing on the Popmart tour. Although the Popmart concert was incredible, this concert seemed so much more real to me, more personal. At the Popmart concert there was so much to take in and the band was so tiny compared to the setting it felt more like I was watching laser-U2 at the planetarium then at a concert. This time the goal really was soul. It genuinley felt like I was in the same room as the band. U2 is so much more than spectical, that there is no need to top the Popmart tour. Anyway they still had more than enough technical surprises. The set couldn't have been chosen better, the right mix of new material (which are all instant classics now) with the old.
I have been listening to Bono's voice since he started having trouble with it on the last tour and I must say it is like night and day. I found myself listening carefully throughout the entire concert for it to cop out. With the exception of one note at the end of "One", the second to last song of the set, his voice sounded wonderful.
My favorite highlights of the show, to name a few, were when Bono started playing "rock, paper, scissors" with a member of the audience and when he was laying ontop of the acending video screen singing "Mysterious Ways".
I could go on for days about the performance but in a "nutshell" it was uphoric. The band did what they set out to do... They "elevated" us to a place where only they can.
