"A game like chess suited me because I was able to put everything from my mind and work with something abstract." — Bono

by Jay B

Well I must admit that this was my first U2 concert ever so I can't compare this concert to any others of theirs. I have been a U2 fan for many years, though.

PJ Harvey took the stage at 7:30 p.m. and performed for about forty minutes. The guitar riffs during some of their songs were great, but unfortunately I couldn't understand what PJ was saying through the songs. Nonetheless, they performed well.

For the next 40-50 minutes, the crew prepared lighting and tuned the instruments. The man who had to tune The Edge's guitars was on the stage for quite some time :) ! But anyway after the arena speakers belted out Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground" and then The Beatles "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" the crowd was getting pumped..

A few moments of silence and then "Elevation" began to play from the arena speakers as the fans eagerly looked forward to the band's entrance. Anyway, all of them ran up the steps except for Bono who was the last. The guys took their spots and what proceeded proved to be quite memorable. From their current work ("Beautiful Day", "Kite") to their 'classics' ("I Will Follow", "Sunday Bloody Sunday") U2 did a great job.

Perhaps a humorous moment of the evening was during the second stanza of "Stay (Faraway, So Close)" in which Bono messed up on some of his words. But he recovered nicely as he began the stanza over amidst cheers.

Since this *was* my first concert, I really can't expand on how the concert world affects me, but I must say that this concert was great and it will be the first of many. Thank you, U2!
