"We can write sexy songs and spiritual songs — and songs that are both. We can write anything we want — and get away with it." — Bono

by Michael Trei

This was my second U2 gig, having been at their US debut show in 1980 at the Ritz in NYC. This time, a group of about six of us drove over from Syracuse. It was in a fairly small college gym, with perhaps 500-1000 people attending. I don't remember many set list details, but it was a combination of new material from War, along with older Boy and October songs. The staging was was pretty simple, with a few tall white flags, one of which Bono would occasionally march around with while climbing up the PA stacks. Following the gig, we made our way over to the only decent hotel in town, a Holiday Inn, to try and track down the band. We found Bono and Larry in the hotel bar, and got them to sign a few LPs we had brought. Bono signed my copy of War with "It's a heliday at the Holiday Inn '83", a record I have kept to this day.
