I'm not afraid to be ugly or to be myself. -- Bono, 1981

by Andy Venzke

While U2 put on one of the most elaborate (and certainly the most expensive at $1.5 million/week!) shows I have seen, I left feeling somewhat unfulfilled.

From a visual standpoint, the band relied too heavily on its use of video, which lost its effect after the first couple of songs. Lighting was minimal. I have worked to set up many ARENA shows which probably had more lighting instruments than U2. They could have put on a much better show, by going with a smaller, more traditional (cube) video wall and shifting money into lighting.

Also, the "lemon" entrance would have been much more dramatic as the opener of the show rather than the encore.

On the musical side, the show sailed smoothly with the exception of a mic problem about halfway through. The acoustic version of "Staring at the Sun" was somewhat dissapointing, as it is less familiar than the original.

While I did enjoy this show, I would probably not spend the money on it again.
