"The emotions that are on this record are very abstract, out of focus, fragmented, its words are gray. But that is exactly what it should be." — Bono, on War

by Diann Pollack

The heat and humidity were wicked in St. Louis, but U2 certainly rose to the occasion and put on a great performance. They had to have been miserable...Bono changed shirts at least once...but they seemed to enjoy themselves. I suspect that they just love a challenge!
Bono charmed everyone by bringing a young boy on stage to sing with him, and when they played "Miss Sarajevo," his voice was spot-on. It is still touching to see Mark Kelly speak to Gabby Giffords; how kind of U2 to gift them with such an amazing way to connect with one another regularly.
Both "One" and "Pride" were done exceptionally well; the Edge was on his game. The set list may be too standard for some fans, but the band manages to always make their music fresh...even in a sauna!
My only caveat is that there was far too little of the camaraderie and general happiness on the part of the crowd that I've come to expect (and crave). The crowd participation began to wane near the end of U2's set, which I attribute to the heat and consumption of alcohol.
Some men were even surly, which is so atypical of a true fan. However, that won't affect my perception of U2's performance tonight, or the sheer joy of seeing them once again. As others have written, it seems inevitable that U2 will eventually stop touring in order to pursue their own interests and lives, but I hope to see them again before that happens. And I hope it's cooler!
