"Someone wrote in a bathroom 'God is dead: Nietzche.' And someone wrote after that 'Nietzche is dead: God.' I love that." — Bono

by Daniel Patrick McDermott

I saw U2 in Washington, DC on June 19, 2001 and thought it was the best concert I had ever seen. Between then and now our world changed and U2 adapted the show to share our grief and mourn our losses. I saw fans hugging and crying as the names of people killed on September 11 scrolled on the screen behind the band. The setlist was different but included surprises such as Please and Out of Control. Peace on Earth/Walk On/Allelujia sent the fans on their way: "stay safe tonight". In the end I think this was a better concert than DC for what wasn't said, but, what was felt and understood.
