"I feel like it's always raining in our songs, that bittersweetness. ... We surrender too easily to the blues. We, if we're not careful, are bleeding all over the world." — Bono

U2 Triumph at Secret London Show

- February 09, 2001

U2 delighted the audience at London's Astoria last night with a set filled with new
and classic tracks spanning their twenty years in the business. The band appeared
onstage and launched into The End of the World. Bono didn't speak much
throughout the show, other than to re-affirm, much to the delight of the audience,
that they were the best band in the world!

Having not played such a small venue in London since 1983, the band had to strip
down their sound to fit the more intimate venue. An absolute highlight of the
evening was their rendition of 'Desire' which rather than being the usual stadium
rock anthem sounded raw and bluesy and almost like a garage rock tune.

Tracks played included 'Beautiful Day'; 'Elevation'; 'Stuck In A Moment You Can't
Get Out Of'; 'New York'; 'Bad'; 'I Will Follow'; 'Desire'; 'All I Want Is You';
'Discoteque'; 'Staring At The Sun'; 'Mysterious Ways' and 'One'. The latter
provided the low point of the evening when audience members Chris Evans and
Billie Piper were so overcome with the track it inspired them to stop bopping out of
time and start snogging. Yuk!

The celeb packed audience included Salman Rushdie, John Hurt, Shaznay Lewis,
assorted members of Massive Attack & Stereo MC's, Sara Cox, Dr Fox, Kylie, Will
Self, Christopher Ecclestone, Mick Jagger, Martina Topley Bird, Oasis, Naomi
Campbell, Alex James, Keith Allen, Gavin Rossdale, David Baddiel, Ash, Stephen
Hendry & Bob Geldof to mention a few!
