"Bono ... doesn't slave for weeks on the nuances of a lyric or a melody. He comes in and kind of leaps, and that can be an incredibly inspiring thing to see." — Edge

Secret U2 gig is a night of golden oldies

- February 08, 2001

AROUND 2000 fans last night enjoyed a close encounter with Irish rock
heavyweights U2.

The band played a "secret" gig in London, giving fans a rare chance to
see them up close.

And the lucky few who packed the Astoria included some of the biggest
names in showbiz. All of Oasis, minus Noel, turned up.

Also in the audience were supermodels Naomi Campbell and Helena
Christensen, along with Kylie Minogue, Scots snooker star Stephen Hendry
and dance act The Chemical Brothers.

The intimate show served as _ a taster for their Elevation tour, which
kicks off in Florida in March.

Chatting to OTR before the gig, Bono said: "It's 15 years since we
played a small venue.

"It's like landing a 747 on your front lawn. But our new songs make
sense in a smaller venue.

"On our night, we're the best band in the world.

"If it's not our night, we're one of the crappest. But I think that
tonight is our night."

Bono kicked off with End Of The World before playing three songs from
their album, All That You Can't Leave Behind - Beautiful Day, Elevation
and Stuck in a Moment.

Fans screamed with delight when U2 played 11 O'Clock, Desire and
Mysterious Ways.

And in an impressive finale, the band played Bad and the rarely heard
"oldie" 40.
