"We may well be the future of rock 'n' roll, but so what? When I go back to Dublin, to my girlfriend it's more of a distraction that I'm in a band than any big deal — and my old man shouts at me for not doing the dishes before I go to bed." — Bono, 1982

Comments: U2 play a 45-minute set at the MTV pre-show party for the MTV EMA's. The show features the live debut of "Get Out Of Your Own Way," which is performed twice. Prior to the first performance of the two, Bono quotes from a poem called "The Gift" by Czeslaw Milosz. This version is what airs a day later during the awards broadcast. For the second perfomance, signs are passed to the audience with messages like "It's all gone south," "Resistance," "Call your mother" and the song title, "Get out of your own way." Bono tells the audience this version is being recorded as a music video.
