U2 recording song for T. Rex tribute album

@U2, September 15, 2017
By: Matt McGee

While in New Orleans this week, U2 hit a recording studio to record a track for an upcoming tribute album for '70s glam rockers, T. Rex.

The first clue that something was up came Wednesday night, September 13, when Trombone Shorty posted a photo on Instagram of himself with Edge and producer Hal Willner. Just last week, the New York Times reported that Willner was working on a T. Rex tribute album. And the final clue to the puzzle came from Edge himself, who did an interview from New Orleans with Australian radio hosts Hamish and Andy. Edge let the cat out of the bag when Hamish and Andy began the interview by asking where Edge was calling from:

Edge: I'm outside a recording studio in New Orleans. We just ... we're in the middle of recording a track for a friend who's putting a T. Rex tribute record together.

Hosts: Oh wow.

Edge: Yeah, it's sounding great.

This is far from U2's first time crossing paths with Willner. He produced most of the tracks on the Million Dollar Hotel soundtrack album that came out back in 2000. He also produced Bono's solo song, "A Dying Sailor To His Shipmates" in 2006. More recently, he was musical director for Adam Clayton's Musicares event this past June in New York City.

As far as the T. Rex connection goes, Bono has discussed on numerous occasions that he was a big fan in the 1970s. And in 2001, he contributed to a cover of T. Rex's "Children Of The Revolution" on the Moulin Rouge soundtrack.
