Set List Recap: Detroit, Sept. 3, 2017

@U2, September 03, 2017
By: Sherry Lawrence

The third leg of The Joshua Tree 2017 tour kicked off in Detroit tonight, the first of 11 shows on this leg. There were few changes to the production: The Walter Trump Trackdown introduction remained before "Exit"; the banter between songs seemed consistent with the past two legs; and the visuals remained consistent with the previous legs.

Given the current political climate in the United States as it pertains to immigration, there were no outward comments from Bono regarding immigrants: missing were his references to Emma Lazarus' "The New Colossus," and "Miss Sarajevo" was cut completely from the set. Instead the encore opened with "Beautiful Day."

During "Pride," Bono reminded the audience that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. drafted his "I Have A Dream" speech in Detroit two months after the "Walk To Freedom" rally in 1963, praising the city's historical significance in the fight for equality.

Long-time resident of the Detroit area, Patti Smith, joined U2 onstage for "Mothers Of The Disappeared." Bono also gave props to her late husband, Fred Sonic Smith, during "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For."

"One Tree Hill" was dedicated to Rob, the late father of a fan Bono met outside the stadium earlier in the day.

Heather Heyer, a woman killed by a white supremacist during the protests in Charlottesville, Virginia, was featured among the other female icons during "Ultra Violet (Light My Way)."

U2 closed the show with "One," using the song as an opportunity to raise awareness of Hurricane Harvey relief efforts by The Red Cross, encouraging people to text a donation to the organization.

Next up: Sept. 5 in Orchard Park, New York.
