"It's got a really spongy sound. We've found that when you're men, the slower tempos can be funky."

-- Bono, on "Elevation"

The Joshua Tree 2017 tour kicked off its first of two shows at Amsterdam Arena tonight to another sold-out audience. Bono paid tribute to the late Dutch Prince Johan Friso during "One Tree Hill." He also gave a shout out to the One Campaign's Europe Executive Director, Adrian Lovett, during "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," as well as Anton Corbijn ahead of "In God's Country." Bono said of Corbijn, "He's grown even taller, I'd like to think I have too." Both Lovett and Corbijn were at the show.

Bono offered heartfelt gratitude before "Bad" tonight:

My brother Norman is here tonight. Not only did he give me my first guitar lesson, he introduced me to David Bowie's Hunky Dory and I thought it was a duo. Now, none of us in the band are self-made men. We owe our lives to each other, to family members ... to family members who put their hands in their pockets, friends who kept us out of trouble, partners who saved us from ourselves. And of course, we owe this life to you.

Fans surprised the band with multicolored balloons at the start of "Beautiful Day," prompting Bono to say, "What is this? Look at you!"

Next up: the penultimate show of the European leg of The Joshua Tree 2017 tour tomorrow, also at Amsterdam Arena.
