Report: U2 Working with Songwriter Carl Falk

@U2, April 03, 2012
By: Matt McGee / @mattmcgee

U2 is reportedly working on new songs with songwriter/producer Carl Falk, whose recent credits include popular songs from artists like Nicki Minaj, Taio Cruz and Irish-British boyband One Direction. The news comes from the UK tabloid The Sun, with an over-the-top headline about U2 going in a new direction as a boyband. Skip all that, but the real news is that the band does appear to be working with Falk in some capacity. He's quoted in the article saying this:

"There's a long way to go but we are doing something with U2."

The "we" is presumably his songwriting team/friends.

It's easy to quickly dismiss this as the stuff of tabloids, but digging into Falk's Twitter account led to this update from January 23rd:

(If you can't see that for some reason, it says "Waiting for feedback from Bono! Fingers crossed :)") Then a month later, he tweeted again about meeting The Edge on a flight to London (where Falk's song for One Direction won a Brit Award):

Based on that tweet, it sounds like Falk hadn't met The Edge in person before, so his work with U2 in January was probably done remotely. In any case, despite the sensational writing in The Sun, it seems pretty clear that there's some truth behind the story and that U2 has been doing something with Carl Falk. If you're not familiar with Falk, here's a list of his career musical credits.
