I'm not a big CD person myself. I like the crackles. -- Bono

Obama, Bono on wish list for commencement

The Virginia Gazette
WILLIAMSBURG - Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) and lead singer Bono of the rock group U2 are among the candidates for commencement speaker at the College of William & Mary this May. The Flat Hat, which published its first Tuesday edition this week as part of a switch to twice-weekly publication, reported that the two popular figures are on a student-generated list of suggestions.

Once students come up with a final list, it's presented to provost Geoffrey Feiss, who makes revisions and then passes along the list to the Board of Visitors. They get to choose from a pool of 15 finalists.

Bono paid a visit to Kingsmill in 2006, serving as keynote speaker for the House Democratic Caucus. President George Bush and former President Bill Clinton spoke to the group this year.

Senior class president Jess Vance said the final announcement would come Feb. 24. Past commencement speakers have included Glenn Close, Jon Stewart, Bill Cosby, Colin Powell, Margaret Thatcher and, most recently, Desmond Tutu.
