[Ed. note: This is the twelfth in our series, which highlights visits to the U2 Joshua Tree, as shared by our readers.]

The year was 2012, we were in a drought period of U2 news and events. My wife and I were eager to do something U2-related, and since we had already planned a trip to Las Vegas we thought of The Joshua tree. After investigating online about the site location we decided to rent a car and go search for it without any map or GPS.

Early morning, September 14, we embarked on this very special journey, armed with just what we had grasped from our research and a Joshua Tree-heavy playlist. We did not stop anywhere else on our way there. After a little over three and a half hours of driving, we went past a big curve and some hills, that’s when a big flat area surrounded by mountain ranges emerged and we knew we were close. We parked right before the next curve and headed down on a straight line and after a short walk we found what we were looking for.

Once at the site of the tree, we felt a connection to all the people who have made a previous pilgrimage to this magnificent place. We browsed through the collection of memorabilia left by other fans and took many pictures. We then went back full of energy and feeling accomplished, contemplating all the beauty that the Death Valley has to offer, including another famous U2 landmark: Zabriskie Point.

In all, we spent nine hours on the road and it was one of the most memorable experiences of my U2 fandom. It is one that can only be shared with fans because other people cannot comprehend why it is that we go to the middle of nowhere to see a tree.

But it is much more than a tree. It is a magical place where time is irrelevant, where love is the only language, where everything you can imagine is real … a place where the streets have no name.
