It's a beautiful day for Concern as Bono donates album proceeds

Irish Independent, November 16, 2011

The man at the helm of Concern Worldwide was taken aback when he answered his phone last month and Bono was at the other end -- offering him money.

The charity's CEO Tom Arnold said he was stunned but delighted when the U2 frontman asked if the organisation would accept all the proceeds from the band's new celebrity cover version of its landmark album 'Achtung Baby'.

The album, called '(Ahk-toong Bay-Bi) Covered', features performances from some of the biggest rock and pop stars in the world, including Nine Inch Nails, Patti Smith, Depeche Mode, Snow Patrol, Jack White and The Killers.

The album is available today on the iTunes Store, with all proceeds going to Concern's famine appeal in east Africa.

It includes a special re-mix of U2's 'Even Better Than The Real Thing', along with tracks from fellow Irish artists Damien Rice and Gavin Friday.

More than 10 million people in Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia are at risk of starvation following a nine-month drought.

"We are honoured they have chosen Concern as the exclusive beneficiaries," Mr Arnold said.

The album will also be available in the December issue of 'Q' Magazine. The release also coincides with the re-release of a 20th anniversary edition of 'Achtung Baby' last month.
