End of the Line for Spider-Man on Broadway

@U2, November 18, 2013

Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark, the controversial-but-popular musical with songs penned by Bono and The Edge, will end its Broadway run in January. Producers plan to move Spidey to an undisclosed venue in Las Vegas beginning in 2015.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the news, which was later confirmed by Broadway World. Spider-Man spokesperson Rick Miramontez gave this statement:

SPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark will be ending its historic Broadway run in January 2014. We are excited to report that the next destination for SPIDER-MAN will be the entertainment capital of the world: Las Vegas. Further details will be announced in the weeks to come.

The production has historically been one of the biggest ticket-sellers on Broadway, but attendance has been down in recent weeks. (Anecdotally, when I saw the show in early October, there were a lot of empty seats in the theater, particularly in the balcony areas.) Even when Spider-Man was at or near capacity, the production's high costs made it difficult to turn a profit.

UPDATE: The Spider-Man Twitter account has confirmed that the final performance on Broadway will happen January 4, 2014.
