"Those early, early shows. There is nothing scarier than playing to a half-full bar of people who are really not that interested." — Edge

Dave Fanning Didn't Play New U2 Today, He Played Dark Stares

@U2

Somebody's been duped. It was either Irish radio DJ (and longtime U2 friend) Dave Fanning, or it was the rest of us that got caught up thinking that U2's new single, "Invisible," was played today on Fanning's 2FM show. If you missed the excitement in our forum or on Facebook and Twitter, here's what happened:

During his evening radio show tonight (Thursday), Fanning introduced a song that he described as "a brand new, first-time play which is from U2." After the song played, he again confirmed it by saying "it's called 'Invisible,' that's brand new from U2."

But the song Fanning played isn't U2's "Invisible," it's a song called "Bad Machine" by a band called Dark Stares. That song was uploaded to YouTube yesterday with the title, "U2 - New Single 'Invisible' (New Album 2014)." It was uploaded by a YouTube account named "U2 New Album" that seems to have just been created yesterday. The account has three videos, all of which are listed as U2 songs but are actually this same "Bad Machine" song by Dark Stares. And down in the video descriptions, there are obvious links to buy Dark Stares songs on iTunes.

So it appears that someone -- either Dark Stares themselves, or perhaps a big fan of theirs -- is intentionally trying to get U2 fans to hear their band's music. The mystery for now is how this song got onto Dave Fanning's radio show. Was it an accident or mistake at 2FM? Or is this some kind of intentional stunt that everybody's in on except U2 fans?
