"Where are our roots? We don't have funky black roots. We don't have white rock roots. Our music almost doesn't seem to have roots. It's like totally our own." — Bono

Bono's Playlist: David Bowie

Bono picks 15 songs for Rolling Stone

David Bowie's influence on U2 has, perhaps, never been more obvious than in the past 18 months; the band has been taking the stage on the U2 360 tour right after Bowie's "Space Oddity" plays over the stadium PA system. And his influence on Bono, especially, is spelled out in more detail in the new issue of Rolling Stone magazine. As part of a "Playlist Special," Bono is one of several artists that have shared a playlist -- Bono's choice was a David Bowie playlist.

Bono lists 15 songs of his favorite Bowie tunes and shares brief explanations why he chose each one. "What I've chosen from David Bowie is very strict. It's my teenage life as a Bowie fan." Close enough: His playlist comprises Bowie songs from 1969 to 1980. Here are the top five:

1. "Space Oddity"

2. "The Man Who Sold The World"

3. "Changes"

4. "Five Years"

5. "Life On Mars"

You can listen to the full playlist on Spotify, and read about it in the next issue of the print magazine.
