Bono to Cover T-Rex on 'Moulin Rouge' Soundtrack

MTV News, April 09, 2001

A track by U2's Bono is the latest addition to the quirky, star-packed soundtrack of the upcoming movie Moulin Rouge, which also includes a hit cover of "Lady Marmalade" by Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya and Pink.

Bono teamed up with a rather less famous Irish rocker, Gavin Friday, and Friday's musical partner, pianist Maurice Seezer, to record a new cover of T-Rex's glam-rock chestnut "Children of the Revolution."

The album also includes a new Fatboy Slim track, "Because We Can," a collaboration between Beck and Timbaland on a cover of David Bowie's "Diamond Dogs," and two versions of the '40s standard "Nature Boy" -- one recorded by Bowie and another by Bowie and Massive Attack.

Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, the stars of Moulin Rouge, sing on several tracks, including a cover of Elton John's "Your Song" that finds McGregor going up against Placido Domingo and two other opera stars. McGregor will also sing on a tango version of the Police's "Roxanne."

The album's first single, "Lady Marmalade" -- a cover of the '70s hit by Patti LaBelle's former group LaBelle -- has already hit heavy rotation on pop stations.

The film, set in a Parisian nightclub in 1899, is expected to hit theaters in a limited run beginning in May, and will open nationwide on June 1. The soundtrack is due in stores May 8.
