I guess I did my grieving for my father, keening, in front of 20,000 people singing U2 songs. They really carried me, those songs and my three mates.-- Bono, 2002

Bono to appear in Ron Howard's Pavarotti documentary

Bono & Pavarotti

Bono will appear in Pavarotti, an upcoming documentary about the legendary operatic tenor that will be in theaters on June 7. Ron Howard is directing the film, which covers the life and career of arguably the most well-known opera star ever.

Pavarotti and U2 collaborated several times in their careers, most notably on "Miss Sarajevo" from the 1995 Passengers' album, Original Soundtracks 1. Bono, Edge and Brian Eno debuted the song with Pavarotti at the tenor's charity concert that year in Modena, Italy. Bono made a second appearance by himself at Pavarotti's annual charity concert in 2003. The two became friends -- Bono helped Pavarotti launch a children's music center and Pavarotti attended a couple U2 concerts over the years. Bono wrote a moving tribute when Pavarotti died in 2007.

If you were watching the Grammy Awards Sunday night, you may have seen a brief commercial for the documentary, which includes a brief quote from Bono: "The reason why he is great is he lived those songs."

UPDATE, APRIL 9: The first full trailer for this film is now available, and features more of Bono's commentary. Here it is:
