In exactly one month, on Nov. 8, 2019, U2 launches the next leg of The Joshua Tree tour in Auckland, New Zealand. But first, multi-tasker and philanthropist extraordinaire Bono reportedly will appear at the Global Fund Replenishment Conference in Lyon, France this week. This is the sixth Replenishment Conference, a triennial gathering at which the Fund announces financial pledges from donors worldwide to support programs to end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. The Global Fund was founded in 2002 as a “partnership of governments, civil society, technical agencies, the private sector and people affected by the diseases.” The Fund raises money through donor pledges, and then collaborates with local experts in more than 100 nations to support initiatives to help individuals affected by the three diseases. (RED), the foundation created by Bono and Bobby Shriver in 2006, has been a partner with the Global Fund for 13 years. The Global Fund website reports that (RED) has contributed over $600 million toward Global Fund HIV/AIDS grants in Africa. In Jauary 2019, Bono and The ONE Campaign urged donors to support the Global Fund.

The Conference will take place Oct. 9 and 10 at the Marriott Hotel and the Congress Center of Lyon. French President Emmanuel Macron is scheduled to deliver remarks. Bono met with President Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron in July 2017 to discuss the global fight against poverty. In 2013, Bono received France’s highest cultural honor—Commander of Arts and Letters—for his contributions to art and philanthropy.
