Bono Sings, Speaks For Aung San Suu Kyi

@U2, June 18, 2012
By: Matt McGee / @mattmcgee

Saying he was "star struck" at her side, Bono helped honor Aung San Suu Kyi with his words and songs at separate events today in Norway and Ireland.

The day began with the two taking part in a panel discussion during a peace forum in Oslo. Afterward, Bono and Suu Kyi met with the media and, at one point, Suu Kyi told the press that she's a fan of "Walk On," the U2 song written in her honor from 2000's All That You Can't Leave Behind album. You can see some video of that on this Norwegian news site -- scroll down for the video.

Bono and Suu Kyi flew together to Dublin for tonight's Electric Burma concert and other ceremonies in her honor. Bono presented her with Amnesty International's Ambassador of Conscience award -- an honor bestowed on her in 2009 that she couldn't receive while under house arrest in Burma. After that, Bono performed a few songs during the Electric Burma concert. With Damien Rice accompanying on an acoustic guitar, Bono sang "Walk On" and told the audience that Rice was filling in for The Edge. They then sang "One" and Bono dedicated it to The Edge, who lost his mom last week. The full lineup of performers from the concert then came on stage to sing "I Shall Be Released" and "Get Up Stand Up."

Dublin officials also presented Suu Kyi with the Freedom of Dublin Award that she was unable to collect back in March 2000, on the same date that U2 also received the same honor.

Here are some YouTube video links from the day's events. None of the concert so far, but we'll add those if/when they're online.
