You hold onto religion, you know, rules, regulations, traditions. I think what God is interested in is people's hearts, and that's hard enough. -- Bono, 2002

Darcus Breese

Darcus Beese, president of Island Records US, received The Strat award on Thursday at the Music Week Awards at Battersea Evolution in London. The Strat honors an industry person who has made an “outstanding contribution to the music business.”

Bono and Adam were among the artists who paid tribute to Beese, who has helped oversee U2’s career at Island Records, for Music Week, a U.K. music business publication:

“Darcus Beese, what a prince of a man.” (Bono)

“Congratulations, Darcus, you truly deserve this award for everything that you do for all your artists. Island Records has been our spiritual home for a long time now, and as a lifer yourself we truly appreciate everything you’ve done and it’s great working with you.” (Adam)

Other artists who provided tributes included Shawn Mendes, Hozier, Annie Lennox and Jessie J.

Beese was named president of Island Records US in 2018; he had led Island Records UK since 2013. He started working at Island in 1989 as an intern and worked his way up the career chain there. Acts he’s worked with include U2, Amy Winehouse, Mumford & Sons, Hozier, Sugababes, Florence + The Machine, Jessie J and Dizzee Rascal.

The Strat award was named after Tony Stratton-Smith (nicknamed “Strat”), a popular rock band manager and the founder of Charisma Records, who died in 1987.
