"[O]ne of the reasons I'm interested in the principle of surrender, one of the reasons I'm interested in a man of peace like Martin Luther King, is that I'm the opposite."

Bono & One Campaign in Jordan - Refugee Crisis Is Worsening

@U2, March 28, 2016
By: Sherry Lawrence

Bono spoke with ABC's David Muir on Good Morning America to talk about the refugee camps in Jordan and how the One Campaign is working to improve conditions. Bono explained that he was at the world's second largest refugee camp on the border of Somalia in Dadaab, Kenya, where over 350,000 have been displaced for over a quarter century.

They are "living in cardboard boxes, one-third of them born there ... A lot of us in the development community are very worried about the refugee crisis undoing a lot of the good work that has been done in development over the last eight years. That's why I'm here," Bono said.

Bono explained that the refugee situation in Al Mafraq, Jordan, is worsening. "Just a few years ago, 10,000 people a day were forcefully displaced from their homes. At the moment, it's 40,000 people per day displaced from their homes. It's a global problem. We now know that what goes on in the Middle East or North Africa this year will spill out into the streets of Paris or Brussels next year, and then onto the streets of America. We cannot separate ourselves from what's going on in the outside world anymore. It's our world. That's what's come with globalization."

Bono said that 25 percent of Jordan's population is refugee and that the country's "grace is at its elastic limit."

Bono explained that if what happened in Syria were to happen again in another country that it will threaten Europe's very existence, impacting the global community and our values. "These places can be universities and teaching people our values or else they can be places that are dangerous to our ideas and to who we are. Let's take the first course and not the second," he said.
