"But it wasn't the songs that were the attraction. It was the energy and commitment to performance that were fantastic even then. Bono would run around looking for people to meet his eyes." — Paul McGuinness, on U2's early days

"It was a case of me being angry and them being receptive. They really wanted to come and play [Sarajevo] but at that point it was out of the question. Instead, I said, 'You have the biggest televisions in the world, let's go live to Sarajevo. We'd been going two months. I was running out of food. I was running out of people. I found these three girls, a Muslim, a Croat and a Serb. One of the girls asked U2, 'What are you gonna do?' There was a pause and before the band could answer, she said, 'I know what you're gonna do, you're not gonna do anything.' On any great journey you have to hit a moment where you're being cynical. The point isn't to end the war, though everyone can have that illusion once in a while. I had it, (the band) probably had it. Then you take the next step which is you do what you can do and you move on." - Bill Carter, NME 1997

Is there a time for keeping your distance
A time to turn your eyes away
Is there a time for keeping your head down
For getting on with the day
Is there a time for kohl and lipstick
A time for cutting hair
Is there a time for high street shopping
To find the right dress to wear

Here she comes
Let's turn around
Here she comes
To take her crown

Dici che il fiume trova la via al mare
E come il fiume giungerai a me
Oltre i confini e le terre assetate
Dici che come fiume
Come fiume giungera

Here she comes
Let's turn around
Here she comes
To take her crown

Is there a time to run for cover
A time for kiss and tell
Is there a time for different colours
Different names you find it hard to spell
Is there a time for first communion
A time for East 17
Is there a time to turn to Mecca
Is there a time to be a beauty queen

Here she comes
Beauty plays the clown
Here she comes
Surreal in her crown

Dici che il fiume trova la via al mare
E come il fiume giungerai a me
Oltre i confini e le terre assetate
Dici che come fiume
Come fiume l'amore giungera
L'amore e non so piu pregare
E nell'amore non so piu sperare
E quell'amore non so piu aspettare

Is there a time for tying ribbons
A time for Christmas trees
Is there a time for laying tables
And the night is set to freeze

O lijepa, o draga, o slatka slobodo
O lijepa, o draga, o slatka slobodo
O lijepa, o draga, o slatka slobodo

English translation of the Italian lyrics:

You say that as a river finds its way to the sea
And as the river you'll find your way back to me
Beyond the borders and the thirsty lands
You say that as the river
As the river, you say that love will find a way
But love, I'm not a praying man
And in love I can't believe anymore
And for love I can't wait anymore

English translation of the Croatian poem "Dubrovka" ("The Girl Of Dubrovnik") by Ivan Gunduli, which is recited by Bono at the end of the song:

Oh beautiful, oh dear, oh sweet freedom

(This song features Luciano Pavarotti on co-lead vocals, singing the Italian sections, and can be found on the album Pavarotti and Friends: Together for the Children of Bosnia)
