"It's a total audience assault. You certainly wouldn't want to be doing the wrong drugs out there." — Adam, on Zoo TV

U2 Bible References: Pop

Pop (1997)

On its ninth album, U2 mixed rock with progressive sounds of the European dance and electronica scenes. One of the band’s least selling records—potentially due to the hurried pace of its final stages of production—it was a bit of disappointment for a group accustomed to awards and honors.

Each song may show up in one, two or three of the following categories:

Direct Quotes: lyrics that are clearly taken from specific verses in the Bible

Indirect References: lyrics that are likely referencing the Bible but without quoting specific verses

Possible Influences: lyrics that hint at biblical themes and influences, but have no overt connection

"Mofo"

U2 lyric

Lookin' for to fill that God shaped hole

Possible influence

While the “God-shaped hole” is popular, it’s not something found explicitly in scripture. Rather, Blaise Pascal, in 1670, is likely the originator of the idea. Regardless, this quote about God fits the theme of “Mofo” very well: “What else does this craving, and this helplessness, proclaim but that there was once in man a true happiness, of which all that now remains is the empty print and trace? This he tries in vain to fill with everything around him, seeking in things that are not there the help he cannot find in those that are, though none can help, since this infinite abyss can be filled only with an infinite and immutable object; in other words by God himself.” (Pensées VII, 425)

"The Playboy Mansion"

U2 lyric

The gates of that mansion

Possible influence

John 14:2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. (KJV)

U2 lyric

Then will there be no time of sorrow

Indirect reference

Revelation 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. (KJV)
