I don't recall exactly why I began @U2 way back in October, 1995, but it sure seemed like a good idea at the time. My intentions were humble -- I just wanted a place to express myself as a U2 fan. Some fans express themselves by being collectors, some by traveling around the world when U2 is on tour, or any number of other ways. @U2 is how I express my fandom.
In 1995 I was five years into a media career that saw me working first in the newspaper business, then in radio and television. Doing a news-based web site about my favorite band was a logical step to take. Suffice it to say, I never expected to upload a page listing two dozen staff members.
I've been a U2 fan since the early 1980s and I can't even imagine what I'd be listening to if these guys hadn't come along. It's all about that feeling I get when I'm at a U2 show and the opening strains of "Streets" begins. That's why I'm a U2 fan.
I've never met the band, and don't really care to. What I love is the music. That attitude is no doubt influenced by the timing of my attachment to U2 -- it was when Bono repeatedly emphasized in interview after interview that there's nothing special about the four individuals that make up U2, but put them together and they make special music. I believe him.
It's been a great ride, and I hope it lasts a lot longer. As long as U2 has something to sing about, I'll be listening.
