With over 7,000 items in our news archives, it's a safe bet you haven't read all of them! This month we continue our look at 1987.

Band of Holy Joy, NME

Bono: "Since I was 17 I've been in this band and it so happens that most of my friends are musicians or writers, what have you. Now all my identity has been wrapped up in this life, this U2 thing. Recently, I've got to thinking this isn't such a healthy thing. In all other areas I'm a total embarrassment. Socially, God, I'm a social inept. That's what makes me laugh when people ask me what it's like being a rock 'n' roll star."

Rockin' All Over the States, Hot Press

A deafening noise rocks the stadium when U2 leave the stage, a combination of cheering and screaming, unlike anything I've ever heard before at a rock concert, and which, incredibly, continues to rise in volume until the band return for encores... for the first time in my U2-watching career, I notice that the Edge and Adam swap lead and bass guitars, even though the guitarist convinces me afterwards that they've been doing it ever since ["40"] was recorded.

Luminous Times, Musician

Larry Mullen, newly vocal after years of refusing interviews, is the most down-to-earth in his comments, which are generally wry and good-humored. At a New York press conference last spring a reporter asked the band if Larry's status as a sex symbol in Japan had spread elsewhere, Mullen, who had not spoken a word the whole time, raised his head, leaned forward and said, "Not yet, but we're hopeful."
