U2 was in the studio this week

As soon as "Winter" was nominated for a Golden Globe award this week, Bono and Edge hit the publicity circuit and did a number of interviews -- mostly with movie-related media outlets -- to promote the song and help its chances of winning. Bono, in this interview with The Hollywood Reporter, says that U2 (or at least he and Edge) is in a Manhattan studio: Where are you right now? I'm in Manhattan. We're in the studio. Are you working on a new album? Yeah. We really didn't take a day off. We went straight from the stage, the Brandenburg Gate -- we played a concert for the reunification of Germany, the anniversary of that -- and the next day we went into the studio because we had this crescendo of excitement toward the end of the tour. We were playing better than we'd ever been playing. We thought, 'If we could just get this down, if we could get this feeling into some songs...' So that's what we did. The interview was conducted on Tuesday. Earlier in the interview, Bono says Edge was working on an electronic version of "Winter" on Monday. As the 360 tour was winding down, there were reports that U2 would try to finish Songs of Ascent in Vancouver in November. That rumor later became December. But it seems like they may have settled on New York City, instead.
