@U2 talks to Reeve Carney

@U2, July 30, 2011
By: Karen Lindell

This week, @U2 talked to Reeve Carney, who plays Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Broadway's Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark. He and his band, called Carney, are opening for U2, along with Arcade Fire, at tonight's Moncton concert. Those at the show are in for a treat. These guys -- along with Reeve, the band members are his brother Zane on guitar, Aiden Moore on bass and Jon Epcar on drums -- sound great live. They also all play in the pit orchestra for "Spider-Man."

Here are a few excerpts from the interview that talk about the Moncton show. We'll post the full interview in a few days.

@U2: Was the show that Carney did Monday (July 25) at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City a rehearsal for the Moncton show opening for U2?

Reeve Carney: It was coincidental we had that show booked. I wanted the show to be pretty flawless, and according to the audience it was great, but the sound on stage was really terrible. I was struggling. But the good thing is, I’ve never played in a stadium. I think everything I like to hear as a vocalist are things I’m going to be hearing in the stadium because I’m a bit old-school. I like hearing a very live sound and something that’s really big and washy in terms of the vocal sound. From what I understand, singing in stadiums, that’s what it is, whereas when you play in clubs, sometimes it’s more of a dead sound, so it was a little bit of a challenge.

You know, we hadn’t played together in four months, so it was really good that we had that gig to prepare us for this weekend when we’re going to play probably in front of 50,000 people.

@U2: In the past, U2 have performed with the opening acts, or the opening acts have gone on to play with U2. Have you made any plans for an onstage collaboration?

RC: No, I don’t think so. But that would be cool. You never know with those guys.

@U2: Are you going to play songs from Mr. Green (the band's latest album)? Covers? New songs?

RC: We are gonna mainly do songs from our album, maybe a song or two off a future release, and we'll probably do one cover, just to get the audience excited.
