"I think the opposite of love is not hate. It's apathy. You only get angry about things you really care about."

@U2 QOM June 2010: Summer Break

With Bono's back surgery, it looks like U2 will have some free time over the next few months. How would you like U2 to spend their unexpected summer break?

@U2, July 07, 2010

(Each month, @U2 puts a spotlight on U2 fans with our "Question of the Month." We pose a question to our readers and invite answers of 200 words or less. If you're interested in taking part, check our home page to see if the current question is still open. If not, check back shortly after the beginning of next month and we'll have another question ready to be answered!)

@U2 Question of the MonthDori Covington: Larry, Edge, and Adam should have a nice vacation and then get back to the new album(s). Bono needs to BEHAVE, rest, and follow his doctor's orders for the back rehab. He can stay in touch with world leaders and family and friends by phone or e-mail.  No traveling around the world.   We're watching you, B-man.

Brodie McGrahan:: It would be nice to see the band members spend some time with their families since they would have lost the time with them during these months. In the same token I want the boys to stay sharp and on top of being prepared for the tour. Obviously, the number one concern is Bono and his back, but a lot of fans such as myself have been disappointed (which is still fair to say given the circumstance) that the whole North American tour has been postponed. The Skype interview with Edge made things look very promising and that they genuinely have Bono and the fans best interest at heart and will be back and better than ever! See you in 2011, boys!

Jen Willins: I think they should visit Bono often and make sure he is in fact, taking it easy! Make him talk to them through a microphone so he feels like he is performing somehow? This gives them time to maybe figure out how to work with Live Nation to add a show in Cleveland next year?! Somewhere in Ohio? Most importantly, they should enjoy the family and they all should rest up.

Sean McGee: Writing and recording and RELEASING new songs.

Jay Gunnz : Put a friggin album out! A double one too, you've never done that yet. And make some Post/Punk Joy Division type music. I want some darker, catchier songs. Bands like Blank Dogs and Beach Fossils are making some really good Low-Fi Post Punk Material. Those Indie bands are doing something right these days. It's so addicting, and U2 is the oldest last band from those late 70s early 80s bands who pioneered that sound. I just yall to bring that back, who cares if you did it on Boy, make a 2010 edition. You will be excellent at it all over again. I still got Love for you, but the last 10 or so years I've been waiting for something else from you guys. Trip us out more. I was so glad you were about to take Interpol with you on tour. They are one of my favorite new bands this past decade.

Juli Wright: I think the guys should "kick" back and enjoy the World Cup (especially since they worked on all of those cool collaborations with the Soweto Gospel Choir - way cool)!

Ara: U2 needs to get back to the grind and write for its next album given the lackluster nature of No Line On The Horizon. Perhaps writing at least a couple solid tunes for the next tour will reinvigorate fans who thought Horizon wasn't up to snuff.

Shade Swimmer: Summer break is summer break! I know it might not apply to some grown-ups, but it should! U2 should be able to relax for a while (if they want) and experience normal life. There are so many things they could do. Making more music is great for all of us fans but Bono should probably rest right? Whatever they do, it's summer; enjoy!

Johan Runestam: I'd like the boys to go relax for a while, they truly deserve it. Eat a sandwich, watch a movie, write a song (the new U2 song "Back Attack", consider it)! See this as an opportunity rather than a burden. We will not weep nor cry, perhaps shed a tear or two, but we'll stick by and hold your back.

Camilla Brobjerg : I would like it if the boys did spend time with their families. I bet that the time would be well spent. ;-)

Nathaniel R.: I'd like to see (or hear) them writing and recording their next album, be it Songs of Ascent or the rumored completely new set of songs. I'm not sure I much care about the Spiderman musical score, though.

Michele Pedrotti: U2 band, I think that you should rest, spend time with your family and friends, have fun and do what you want to do.

Evee: How do I feel the boys should spend their unexpected summer? RELAXING!!!!???  With their families! LO. Those guys are on the road so much, that I am certain their families are just happy, over the moon just to have them HOME!

Sean Horne: I say just mellow out.  Take time with your families.  Have a summer off, with all the touring, how much time off do you really get during the summer?  You deserve it!

Jeni Schmitt: I wish the guys would spend some time on the atu2.com & u2.com websites answering some of their fan's questions and learning about who we are and what we want to know.  It would really be cool to know that they were hearing from individuals instead of getting "corporate" information about their fans.  Thanks.

Raphael: Bono needs a quiet time to be fit for the next legs of 360° tour, I assume that the 3 other guys have to take in charge of Bono's extracurricular activities and try to save the world this summer. Edge has been involved in Louisiana, I'm sure he can help President Obama to stop this BP Oil nightmare in the Mexico Gulf. Adam's coolness and composure will be perfect for a peace negotiation in the Middle East. Last but not least, Larry will gather all European presidents in a pub and after a couples of pints find a practical solution to solve the financial crisis (I guess Paul McGuinness can help him, he proves he has financial skills managing U2's interests).

U2 Fanatic: I'd like to see Edge remodel his Malibu home, Adam shop for clothing and Larry grow a mustache.

Diane McDonald : I think they should all go home and play with their kids.  Or give them a visit, get injected back into their lives where endless recording and touring may have separated them. I also respect Larry's politics (what brief accounts of them he has revealed) and would like to see him writing or blogging about them. I understand Bono's idea of "fighting from within" and so his consenting to photo ops with politicians of questionable ethics, but it would be nice to hear the other side from within the group. The hard line. He should be using every one of Bono's photo ops as an opportunity for telling the other side of the story. Example: when Bono had his picture taken with Bush, Larry could have made a public comment about him being a war criminal (Bush, not Bono!).  It may undermine Bono's relief efforts but celebrity is celebrity. And since when is it okay to ask for money from a murderer? Help one country while another is being wrongfully assaulted?  It would also be a good lesson/example in agreeing to disagree and family relationships. There's my 2 cents.

Stevie: I hope they prep the Achtung and Rattle and Hum remasters. I also hope they are working on some new stuff.  NLOTH is okay but I think Bono should listen to some of his younger singing days for vocal inspiration.  I also feel NLOTH could have been mixed better. More drum and bass please!

Brian Parsons: It would be nice if the band was able to make some progress on the new album, if that's even possible with Bono's back. Another thing would be for them to invest some time into giving more thought on how they could give more to the fans by acting in some fan demand like providing custom DVDs of concerts that fans attended. The Who does this. I think if fans want to order a concert online to buy that they attended this would he awesome. Ideas like this should be considered. Another might be to explore getting their tunes onto such games as Rock Band as that expands their audience to younger kids.

Sharon: I just really want the best band in the whole world to get some much needed rest and to spend time with their families, and catch up on all those little things that they never have time to do because they are out there entertaining us. I have a great respect for this band and have been listening to them for far longer than I care to remember, and they have never disappointed me in the music that they bring.  I am also hoping this rest will give them time to come up with some more great material because they never cease to amaze me with their ability to write absolutely wonderful music.  Because my health is not that great I am sad to say I haven't been able to go to their concerts in quite a few years but I always buy their albums and CD's when they come out, and I know for a fact that their best work is yet to be written. May God speed good health to Bono and watch out over the others, Edge whose guitar playing is marvelous, and Adam whose bass is so in tune with the songs and Larry who is a wizard on those drums, so that they may be able to continue to bring joy to every one that knows great music when they hear it.
