@U2 QOM June 2008: What's the one piece of advice you'd like to give any member of U2 or the band as a whole?
@U2,
July 02, 2008
(Each month, @U2 puts a spotlight on U2 fans with our "Question of the Month." We pose a question to our readers and invite answers of 200 words or less. If you're interested in taking part, check our home page to see if the current question is still open. If not, check back shortly after the beginning of next month and we'll have another question ready to be answered!)
-- Chris Taylor Larry, just want to see your beautiful smile!! -- Kathy Politics and U2 music have been linked at the hip throughout my adult life. In the U.S., as of today (June 4) we appear to have a presidential candidate who represents change –- and a voting public that is finally demanding it, as well as more accountability, from our elected politicians. The interesting thing to me about that is that Ms. Clinton was unable to clinch the nomination despite being married to a former U.S. President who was almost universally loved. The lesson apparently is that we can love him for his past good deeds, but it's time to proceed on a higher road to goals, rather than forgiving the same old behaviors. I've always elected U2 as my favorite band. No one else has ever come close. No one can match U2's intelligence, their universal relevance, and their bang for the buck. Following U2 has given me incentive to see the world, literally. With all that in mind, my advice, if I can be so bold as to offer any, is to "stay gold" as the filmmaker advised. I, as part of the US political public referenced above, feel overly barraged with marketing ploys, and I'm beginning to retreat to my core values and resent and reject the plastic greediness of the advert barrage, no matter who it's coming from. A little mystery goes a long way, so please don't cheapen the future U2 experience by over-publicizing or selling out to sponsors. Preserve your niche. You've earned it, and your ardent fans will continue to support you in cult status. Today's kids will eventually figure out that there's a difference between cookie cutter hype and true talent, and if they're truly musical they'll embrace the Talent...It outlasts the glitter of the cash... Thanks for always caring about what you produce for us. The energy exchange between your work and our love of it has built something unique and lasting, and you've made the world better. Stay gold. -- Nancy Daly The one piece of advice I'd give the lads is to open up the vault and release everything on digital audio and video! There seem to be a lot of "completists" among their fans and I'm sure this would satisfy their (my!!) need to complete their (my!!) collections...legally! -- ElJayVee To Bono and Adam: if you're still smoking please quit! -- Eric Weiss Know your limits. -- Josh Nathan I'm no longer a paying member of u2.com because I feel disconnected from (and disillusioned by!) it. I liked the previous incarnations much better, but one should look forward, not back. So, I would suggest U2 look to nin.com for the future of u2.com in every capacity (especially the "members only" sections). That is all. Oh, wait, no, and bring back Propaganda of old, pretty please. -- Melissa St. Hilaire Guys –- whoever's brainchild the artwork was on HTDAAB – please don't do that again. No offense, but it still hurts to look at it. -- Kevin Shannon My one piece of advice to all members of the band is to learn how to play more of your songs live. There are a set number of songs that U2 plays with each tour, and it gets old. Learn how to play the great songs that people have forgotten about –- songs that perhaps you've never performed live and ones you may not be comfortable with -– challenge yourselves!! Imagine how you would play a song like "Drowning Man" and "When I Look At The World" live. Or "Acrobat" -– just think of how awesome the Edge solo would be on a live version of "Acrobat." And when you go acoustic, don't just do it with Bono/Edge -– get the whole band in the act like you did with "Stay" and others on the Zooropa tour. Thanks -– see you next year. -- Paul Byrne Dear Larry, please never grow your hair again -– and -– smile!! -- Barbara Please never change and keep talking to fans. We love you. -- Dianne
