"People think I tell the band what direction to go in. The truth is, they tell me. The singer has to put into words the feelings in the music."

-- Bono, 2004

@U2 QOM July 2009: If you could give one of the band a T-shirt to wear on stage at a concert, what would be on the shirt?

@U2, August 05, 2009

(Each month, @U2 puts a spotlight on U2 fans with our "Question of the Month." We pose a question to our readers and invite answers of 200 words or less. If you're interested in taking part, check our home page to see if the current question is still open. If not, check back shortly after the beginning of next month and we'll have another question ready to be answered!)

@U2 Question of the MonthI would want them to wear something funny, like: "I have been in a rock band for over 25 years and all I got was this lousy t-shirt."

-- Jen Willins

A T-Shirt with a SixBurgh Steelers Logo on the front and a big picture of Dan Rooney, the newly-confirmed US Ambassador to Ireland, on the back.  He will be a tireless worker for enhancing the relationship between the US and Ireland.

-- Streetr

It would be -- 'ONE OF THE CROWD'.

-- Mark Jaquette

I would give a "Gift of Life" shirt to help raise organ donation awareness in honor of my brother who passed away waiting for a liver transplant.

-- Michael Petrelli

A concert-style T-Shirt (white arms, black torso) with a big picture of me on the front saying "U2's biggest fan tour 2010"  and all the U2 shows I have been to on the back with the dates and years and "We let him in the sound - Leg 2 - 2010". Tour symbols on the arms using head shots of my family (like the Zooropa baby style). I figure since I have been wearing U2 concert shirts since 1987, it would be a change to have them wear me!!!

-- Steve

I would really love to see one of the band members (or all) wear 'the puffy shirt.' Haha! A white, frilled, puffy shirt!  I think that would be so funny.

-- Jon

I'd have Larry wearing a t-shirt with big letters saying: "MORE COWBELL".

Bono: "We're four Irish boys who can't dance, but we can sing.  Now let's take it into overdrive.  What does Dr. Larry prescribe?"

Larry: "Clink clink clink clink clink"

-- Matt Catalano

If i could give a band member of U2 a t-shirt to wear on stage it would be a "Tragically Hip" T-Shirt.  The second BEST band in the world!  I think U2 would like them. Give them a listen, they are unique & fantastic live.  The Hip is from Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

-- Eileen M.

I would give a shirt to Bono. I found a shirt with a picture of the African continent on it with the words "The Impossible is Possible." I think it is a perfect shirt for him because it is something he believes. If we all work together to help the African people, "making poverty history" which some people believe is "Impossible" will be "Possible".

-- Elsha Stockseth

"Elevate My Soul" --  it's something I wanted to have printed on a shirt for my son and I to wear after listening to one of my favorites: "Elevation."

-- Traci Greer

I would give Bono a T-shirt that reads on the front, "GOD is coming back and, boy is SHE pissed".  (from the book Seen It All And Done The Rest by Pearl Cleage)

-- Cassandra Rosser

I'd give Bono a Red Cross T-shirt to wear.  I'm an AmeriCorps VISTA member working with the West Alabama Chapter of The American Red Cross and I know how much good they do with very few resources.  I think having Bono wear a Red Cross t-shirt would be a fabulous fundraising opportunity. I know that sounds terribly mercenary, but my job is to expand the West Alabama Chapter and I am very dedicated to my job. Hell, I'm even practicing flicking my business cards for distance just in case I get close enough to the stage with my GA tickets in Atlanta!

-- Monica Lea

A T-shirt of the band called THE CHURCH!! Any shirt by that incredibly underrated and yet critically acclaimed group based in Sydney, Australia. I love U2. I first heard them on Carter Alan's WBCN in Boston, and my brother was head bartender at the Paradise nightclub. I haven't missed a US tour yet since 1981!!!

-- Johnny Coe

It would say, "Bono, please just sing!"

-- Joshua Burke

I took a lot of crap for being a U2 fan in high school in the late 80's. All the other guys were into big hair bands. During one exchange when I was pitifully outnumbered, I actually remember saying to them, "Let's see which band last the test of time -- Dokken or U2."

Now 20 years later, Dokken makes ends meet by playing gigs at car wash grand openings. U2, on the other hand, are currently on a sold-out world tour with a space ship.

So to put this debate to bed for good, I'd ask Edge's mom make him a really sparkly one that says, "See? Jeff was right. We ARE better than Dokken."

-- Jeff from Iowa
