"The songs on Pop sounded great live, but when I listen to them on the record, I just think there's something not there, as opposed to playing them live."

-- Edge, 2000

@U2 QOM January 2009: What song would you most like U2 to cover (that they never have) and why?

@U2, February 04, 2009

(Each month, @U2 puts a spotlight on U2 fans with our "Question of the Month." We pose a question to our readers and invite answers of 200 words or less. If you're interested in taking part, check our home page to see if the current question is still open. If not, check back shortly after the beginning of next month and we'll have another question ready to be answered!)

@U2 Question of the MonthI remember reading in U2 by U2 that Bono said Peter Frampton's "Show Me The Way" was the first song where "he found his voice through someone else's song," or something to that extent. Back then they were called The Hype weren't they? So U2 hasn't covered it yet. ;) I think it would be nice to hear an older, wiser Bono once again performing the song that, over 30 years ago, helped him find a passion for singing.

They may have covered it live, but it would be nice to have a recorded version to listen to.

-- Justin Chidester

"Five to One" - The Doors

Just a bad ass, anti-gun rock song....enough said.

-- Joe, New Jersey

I think U2 would totally kill if they covered "Radioactive" by The Firm! The locomotive bass- n-drums suit Larry & Adam to a T, and Edge could shred the guitar, especially the solo. Needless to say, Bono would rock the vocal and the changing tempos like the pro he is. Give it a shot guys, all the fans would love it!

-- Sid, Charlotte NC

"Speed of Sound" by Coldplay. Let U2 rip them off for a change.

-- Eric R. Weiss

U2 does such a fantastic job covering other material so this has to be a pick that doesn't tempt previous fate. I can think of a couple of tracks I would love to hear them cover. Here is my 2 cents...

"In the Light" - DC Talk
U2 being the spiritually-minded frontrunners in secular music today would do a awesome job of covering a song that is so "U2" in nature. It is about the desire of wanting to do the right thing but looking in the mirror to see that, even though saved by grace, we are still so lost in our humanity.  It isn't a song that hits you over the head with "Christianity" either; just like U2's songs. They can be interpreted in many ways.

DC Talk has expressed openly being tremendous U2 fans and have even covered a few of their songs. I think Bono's voice could capture the passion that this song has throughout. Would fit right in their collection along with "40," "Scarlet," "Tomorrow," "Mofo," "Wake Up Dead Man" and "Yahweh."

"Oh Father" - Madonna
Yes, Bono singing a Madonna song. On the heels of the passing of Bob Hewson, I think Bono could bring a blistering vocal to this track. The song is all about a relationship that has been frayed and broken for most of the artist's life, and hints at the sorrow that it creates. Bono could put this song on like a jacket, having gone through this situation first-hand.  The Edge and Bono would make this song.

"Love Don't Live Here Anymore" - Madonna again
For one reason -- Larry would kill the drum track. The original by Madonna has Tony Thompson from Chic playing drums and in one particular mix of the song, the drums are the loudest instrument. You can feel the soul of the song through the rhythm track with an almost wailing vocal over top. Bono and Larry would rule almost like "Scarlet."  I think it would be a gem.

"Fool in the Rain" - Led Zepplin
Who doesn't shine in this track? Larry, Edge and even Adam would have amazing parts by covering a song that doesn't get half the credit it deserves.  The beat of this song starts it out fun and it never lets go. Bono would have fun with the zippy vocal track while the the other guys jam out to a song that is just a terrific display of musicianship. I would pay big bucks to watch Larry play this song!

I could go on and on but I'm sure you get tons of these. U2 can cover just about anything.

-- Kevin Hawkey, Kalamazoo, Michigan

I would love for them to cover Elvis Costello's "Alison."  It is one of my all time favorite songs.

-- Allison Hunter

"I Can See Clearly Now" -- the Marvin Gay version, but more rock 'n' roll. I would be interested to see what kind of sound the Edge would come up with. Maybe that "bell popping" echo sound from the early days? Adam and Larry would have to find a way to give the song a strong, hard, rocky beat. And the part of the song that crescendos -- can Bono still belt-out that beautiful powerful voice and move us, like so many times before? I think it would be an interesting "fun" song.

-- Marc

"Imagine"  -- John Lennon. A representation of true poetry by John which U2 can channel that soulful meaning to the people

"Sympathy For The Devil"- Rolling Stones. An ironic song for U2 to sing…or I just miss Mr. Macphisto.

"With a Little Help From My Friends" – Beatles. In celebration of music industry that help U2 become the greatest rock band in the world.

"Living on a Prayer" – Bon Jovi. I would really love to hear Bono's voice on this one.

"Are You Lonesome Tonight" – Elvis. A tribute to the King.

-- Marvin Lee Tang

"Here, There and Everywhere" and "For No One" -- The Beatles

In the other Beatles songs that they covered, U2 did an awesome job doing different interpretations. I want more of that since I'm a fanatic of U2 and Beatles.

-- Kelly M Jankauskas

I think PJ Harvey's song "The Desperate Kingdom of Love" would work great for them. A perfect song for U2 -- a little depressing, but still uplifting like the best U2 songs.

-- Noah

I think that U2 should cover “Here Comes the Sun” by The Beatles because it is one of my favorite songs. They have done other Beatles songs but they haven’t done this one that I know of. I think it would be really cool because it is one that sounds like “Wild Honey” (another one of my favorite songs). It also would be cool to hear Bono sing it since he has such an amazing voice. Add that to the rest of the group playing the song and you would have magic!

-- Elsha Stockseth

I think Jimi Hendricks "VooDoo Child" would be pretty cool. Hard but trippy.

-- David Will

An unexpected cover : "Lovely Head" by Goldfrapp. A trip-hop song that should recall the best part of the Million Dollar Hotel album; Bono's voice will perfectly fit with Allisson Goldfrapp's part, I'm sure that Edge can make a brilliant solo and the rhythm section will enjoy the cool ambiance.

-- Raphael Viaux

I would like U2 to cover INXS' "Heaven Sent" as a tribute to the late Michael Hutchence. Bono has often dedicated songs to MH during the Pop, Elevation, and Vertigo tours that followed his death.

-- Brett James

Well, I know this is very random, but I'd like to hear the greatest Irish band do a cover of one of my favorite songs from a truly American singer. "Night Moves" by Bob Seger is one of those really heartfelt ballads of youth that you can't imagine done by any other artist. But I think U2 would do a truly amazing and soulful version.

-- Linda Leszcynski

I would like U2 to cover "Human" by The Killers.

-- Sean

"Comfortably Numb" – Pink Floyd

-- Gr. Remco Vink

I'm not quite sure why, but whenever I've heard the Amanda Palmer song "Leeds United," I've always imagined that it would be a great one for U2 to cover. It's...quite obscure, but there's just something so passionate in the song that would probably transfer pretty well to their style. It would be really interesting to see what they'd come up with, with a song like this one.

-- Phoebe Neale

My choice of song – "Love Hurts" by Nazareth. To find a reason for my choice was not so easy. So, without getting very philosophical, I can say the following:

The lyrics carry a heavy symbolism, "Love is like a cloud, it holds a lot of rain," which can be compared to some of U2's lyrics, "She moves like a shadow across my skin." I think Bono would enjoy reaching those high notes in "take a lot of pain" and "I know it isn't true." I also think that Edge would enjoy expressing his genius talent in the lead guitar solo section after the first chorus. Larry...well, Larry loves hitting things and in the drumming session, as the solo starts, I can almost hear him doing that...and enjoying it! As for Adam...as long as Adam has a bass guitar in his hand, and there is a tune to play to, he is happy!

"Amazing Grace" -- Bono has said it is his favorite song of all time.

-- Ian Kelly
