"The essence of U2 is not something that happened in 1983 or 1993. It includes from 1980 to 2000. You know, all that you can't leave behind, yes, to me the best bit of U2."

-- Bono, 2000

@U2 QOM December 2009: A U2 Gift

What U2-related gift would you most like to have?

@U2, January 05, 2010

(Each month, @U2 puts a spotlight on U2 fans with our "Question of the Month." We pose a question to our readers and invite answers of 200 words or less. If you're interested in taking part, check our home page to see if the current question is still open. If not, check back shortly after the beginning of next month and we'll have another question ready to be answered!)

@U2 Question of the Monthjdd: I want....I SO badly want...the press kit version of Achtung Baby (circa 1991). I understand it has all kinds of craziness in it. Including a wrench/spanner. See what you can do for me. I'd even be happy with a photograph.

press kit

Mark Jaquette: I would like the inflatable U2 Achtung Baby Trabant that's at CD WORLD in Eugene!!!!

Sean: Anything that is signed by the band members!!!!!!

Allie: Every released concert DVD in special edition format.

Debbie Broadman : BONO in a box!

Allison Lehenbauer: As a newer fan, the rereleases and box sets have been wonderful. I am able to get all the fun extras plus an album I've wanted but don't already own. For that reason, I would love to have some kind of box set version of Achtung Baby! That is my favorite album, but strange as it may seem, I don't own a physical copy of the album. I've been wanting that for a while now. Since the guys have been re-releasing so much of their music however, I'm going to try and hold out a little bit longer for that one. If that doesn't happen, I think I already gifted myself a pretty amazing gift. I went to their 360 show at the Rose Bowl. It was my first U2 concert and it was awesome! Best sound at any concert I have ever been to. They even played "Ultraviolet"! Meeting the band would be pretty cool, too.

Tim McAllister : I'd like to have backstage passes to the next Croke Park gig! Barring that, I'd like autographed album covers of all their albums. Barring THAT, just news that Songs of Ascent is on its way would make my holiday cheer!

Anne Steiner: How about an original copy of U2 3, or The Irish Falcon, signed by Bono. A girl can dream -- can't she??

Chapmans: Bono’s Super Bowl jacket!!!

Jen Willins: I want more concert tickets and would love to see U2 in my home town of Cleveland, Ohio!! I love traveling places to see them BUT the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame city would really enjoy having them play here, and we can't figure out why they are not! That would be an awesome U2-related gift for me this holiday season. Hint.

Moira: A trip with Bono to Africa to have a look at what is happening regarding poverty and HIV/AIDS and debt relief. And U2 could play a gig there. Failing that, wondering why they are only doing Glastonbury in UK and no gigs in Ireland or elsewhere in the UK this year...

Maria Diorio: The most personal gift I would love to receive from U2 is a signed photograph just for me. It would make me extremely happy and I would look at it every morning when I wake up and my day would be just great.

Craig Bosko: A U2.com members-only CD that isn't "rarities" that we got with the iTunes box set or remixes. Suggestions for the future: an unplugged CD, or a covers EP, or even the latest Deluxe Edition Remaster.

Elsha Stockseth: Well my gift would be to "Make Poverty History" and to let everybody in the world be able to have clean useable water. It isn’t especially related to U2 but it is something really important to Bono so that is why I would choose that. If we all did just a small part it is definitely possible. For a directly U2 -related gift I would love to have a pair of Bono's new glasses with the star on the sides of them. I have wanted them since the first time I saw him wear them but they were not available for sale. Now that they are I guess I will be asking Santa… just kidding.

Heather: I can tell you exactly what is on my Christmas list this year: Deluxe edition of the Unforgettable Fire and Joshua Tree albums. I hear other U2 fans in the forum talk about the DVD footage and how great they are! Because they are rather expensive (for me anyway) I am not getting my hopes up that they will be under the tree come the 25th. I have worn out my copy of Achtung Baby too....so now I am waiting with great anticipation that they will remaster it and have a deluxe edition with DVD. I'm old school and love the CD format.

Additionally, I would LOVE: U2 iPod and the whole iTunes exclusive digital box set, but that is a pipe dream at this point for me. U2 Go Home Slane Castle Limited Edition DVD. (Can you believe I don't own it? I have to hang my head in shame LOL!) U2: A Diary. If I don't get it this year (or for my birthday in January) I am going to buy it for myself.

John Rajic: It doesn't exist, but there was a rumor last year of a Guitar Hero game that stars a group that rocks in mysterious ways, which everyone took to mean U2 (for obvious reasons). After seeing what EA did with The Beatles Rock Band, I can imagine Activision making a very cool Guitar Hero: U2 combining some studio songs with imagery based on U2 videos and live songs set in pivotal concert locations (e.g., Red Rocks, Live Aid, Sun Devil Stadium, Zoo TV Sydney, PopMart Mexico, SuperBowl, Slane Castle, Rose Bowl). I could also imagine some B-sides and "unreleased" songs being included. That's the gift I'd want. If that doesn't come to fruition (remember the reported CD-i extension of the Zoo TV tour that never happened?), I'd settle for Blu-ray releases of all of U2's VHS and DVD content, including their music videos. Heck, even the DVD release of music videos that haven't made it to DVD (e.g., "Gloria", "A Celebration", "Two Hearts Beat As One,", videos from the 2000's) would be nice.

Ashley: I would LOVE to have a U2 iPod :-).

Brian Clancy: A concert DVD of a complete show, full set list. Seriously, is that so hard to do? A bonus disc that contained other live tracks performed on the tour but not at the main show. Audio is fine if video is unavailable. Bring back proper b-sides too. Enough with the remixes!

Borack: A hug from Adam. I've always admired how Adam diligently, generously and effortlessly provides the foundational chords for so many of the greatest U2 songs. In particular, I almost lost my voice cheering when Bono acknowledged him for his guitar mastery on "New Years Day" during Vertigo. I know this request might seem as bizarre as that made by River Phoenix's character on "Sneakers" (who wanted no more than the girl's phone number, and not some "brass ring") and you'd almost be right. But then again, it would be a genuinely U2-type gift and would accomplish physically what their music already does sonically. Besides, how many people in the entire world can claim that they've hugged Adam? Its value would be "priceless".

Bobbie: I would love to have Bono & the gift of his voice, which helps bring to light important issues in the world & all the people who need help -- he is a gift to the world. :)

Happy New Year to all our readers from Jenn and Kelley, and thanks so much to all of our 2009 contributors to QOM. Please keep the answers coming in 2010!
