"He's the type of person who'll hit you in the ass and get you going. It doesn't make you a lot of friends, but it's a great ability to have."

-- Adam, on Bono

@U2 QOM December 2008: If you could give one gift to U2 this holiday season, what would it be?

@U2, December 30, 2008

(Each month, @U2 puts a spotlight on U2 fans with our "Question of the Month." We pose a question to our readers and invite answers of 200 words or less. If you're interested in taking part, check our home page to see if the current question is still open. If not, check back shortly after the beginning of next month and we'll have another question ready to be answered!)

@U2 Question of the MonthThe gift of lifelong support and respect.

-- Rider On The Storm

Edge:  Musical instruments for Music Rising.
Bono:  2 more hours in each day.
Adam:  A posh scarf that would match the color of his eyes.
Larry:  Something so ridiculous that he would burst into laughter when he opened the box!

-- Patricia Sheahan

I would like to give U2 $20 for the new CD! And I bet a bunch of other people will want to give them the same thing.

-- Anita Smith

If I could give one gift to U2, it would be courage. Courage to finish the album.  Courage to embrace the past by recording straight rock music and releasing their old videos. Courage to release their video catalog on BluRay. Courage to remaster the Rattle And Hum BluRay and include some special features.  Courage to play stadiums in the US. Courage to allow their songs in Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Courage to actually star in Guitar Hero or Rock Band. Courage to take their hats off, stop dyeing their hair and to wear glasses instead of sunglasses (or at least try contact lenses/eye surgery). Courage to wear a real suit. Courage to sell their homes in the South of France. And courage not to fawn on Barack Obama.

-- U2 Fanatic

What do you get people who seem to have it all, or can at least get it all? I would be able to give them a home-cooked meal here in Cleveland, Ohio, with peace and quiet. My two kids would most likely try to entertain them by telling jokes but for the most part it would be nice and quiet! Picture that... In the middle of the craziness of the 2009 tour (fingers crossed), they can enjoy a nice meal with no cameras to bother them. That would be the only gift I could give them. It would be a gift that I would enjoy as well.

-- Jen Willins

Time off to spend at home with family and friends, playing with the kids bbq's, just plain family time, quiet time.

-- Terri Dennison

What would I give U2 for Christmas? Easy.

I'd buy them all T-Mobile phones and make them My Five.

Who would get that coveted fifth spot, you ask? Willie Williams, of course! That way when the boys go on tour, Willie can just text me his stories from the road vs me having to actually go to u2.com to read his blog -- that's soooo 2007. Gawd.

-- Jeff Ebbing

I would like to give U2 a demo CD of my son's band called 'Better off Blind' (Ages 19, 19, 19 & 21). On there is a track called "Freedom." This song is very much a song inspired by what Nelson Mandela and U2 believes in. My son, Chris, wrote this song with U2, Bono and Nelson Mandela in mind.

It is a song about the youth of the day where they ask governments and politicians not to confuse them and also ask churches and institutions to lead the way to enable freedom for all.

It is just amazing to know how U2's music can inspire so many people and letting them hear this song will just be a small token of appreciation for their stance for mankind in society.

-- Kirstie van den Berg

Hi! From kitchen room to globular show. Your dreams are coming through. Bravo! Thank you for hope, love and peace which rises from your songs, hope in a better world.

25 years ago when I heard first time U2, without understanding English language I knew what you sang about. This is God's gift, Bono, please save it; the world needs people like you. God bless you and thank you all who try to make an better world.

My gift for you is a picture that talks about light and hope that man can be reached in spite of tough moments when we can't see a line on horizon. Maybe you find on this photo something interesting for cover of your new album. You don't have to do expensive photo session and that money can go to somebody who really needs it.

Sorry for my English, I hope you understand me. Good bye!

If I could give U2 anything for Christmas, I would give them a private yacht so that they could travel the Western Caribbean -- or of course they could chart their own travels.  There would be one hitch with this gift; it would be two-fold. I would be able to cruise with them and get to know them as individuals. I would be inconspicuous and be more in the background of their travels -- but I would get to come along.
I think they would go for the private yacht as a gift to the band, so I think I could slide by and travel with them.  I would give anything to talk with them and find out how they come up with their lyrics and just get to know them. This would be my gift to U2. I would name the yacht "Soul Mates" -- like mates on a ship -- but it would be more personal for me......or maybe "U2-Me2".........whatever they want!

-- Valerie E.

If I could give U2 one gift for the holidays, it would be to erase all the poverty in Africa and around the world. Although it is mostly Bono that does all the Africa stuff, I know that the other boys would love this present, too. If there were no more poverty in the world not only would everyone have better lives but then the U2 boys would have more time to focus on their music and putting out a new album. The only drawback is that a lot of U2 songs have been inspired by the troubles in Africa and around the world so they would have to find something else to be inspired by and I know that they would.

-- Elsha Stockseth

1.) I would give them a sedative. That way, we could steal the album and release it already!

2.) I would give them me. In a box.

-- Erin Nelson

I would buy U2 a fire for under their asses, so they'll hurry up and get this new album out already.

-- Eric R. Weiss

What do you give to the band who has everything?

If I could, I would give them shorter time periods in between recording new albums, and include a letter to Bono reminding him of the man who once significantly waived a white flag -- who thought that no more than a couple of months was needed to produce great rock n' roll.

To give them time in that space once sung as, "Into the heart of a child," or "The place I started out from," and get them back inside. And in that creative space, I'd give Bono one more record where he felt he could take the shades off again. To give the gift of the mysterious back to the band where less was more.

I'd give their secret identity, "The Passengers," an invitation to make one more record.

They've always had my thanks and my love, and so lastly I would rise and toast the band and their support structure to wish them continued Blessings.

Always.

-- Ian McIntosh
