"I'm Irish. I'm a rock star here. I'm not white either. The Irish are kind of -- pinkish. Underdone."

@U2 QOM August 2009: It's Edge's birthday! What's the perfect birthday gift for our favorite guitarist?

@U2, September 03, 2009

(Each month, @U2 puts a spotlight on U2 fans with our "Question of the Month." We pose a question to our readers and invite answers of 200 words or less. If you're interested in taking part, check our home page to see if the current question is still open. If not, check back shortly after the beginning of next month and we'll have another question ready to be answered!)

@U2 Question of the MonthDan: How many "a new amp" responses did you get? Am I first?

John Rajic: As someone who has thinning hair, I don't want to rag on Edge too much, but for his birthday I'd give him a razor to shave his head.  The skull cap look is getting old and I think he could pull off the shaved look (maybe better than Billy Corg an or Michael Stipe).

Ian Kelly: The Book Zen Guitar By Philip Toshio Sudo.

Hayley: First of all, Happy birthday to our favorite guitar player.  For a man that could buy just about anything he wanted, I believe the best gift as fans we could give is a donation to his Music Rising charity.  It is a charity aimed at helping the musicians in New Orleans (after Hurricane Katrina) replace instruments and to re-establish the blues community. The Edge has been very involved in this project over the past few years. This I believe would be the perfect gift to not only honor our guitar hero, but to also help other in need.  Which has a major message in U2's music.
Thanks and Happy Birthday Mr. Edge.

Elsha Stockseth: I think that I would just give Edge a great vacation with all of his friends. He is such a great guy and he and U2 have been working so hard on the new album and tour that he deserves a break. It must be tiring to keep us fans entertained for 2 hours every concert night and he probably needs to get some rest. I would also let him pick out any guitar that he wants because he could then use it to make some more awesome songs for us fans. If nothing else I would just give him a great birthday because when you are a great rock star like The Edge you don't really need a lot of stuff. I hope you have a great day Edge, you are awesome!

pennylane: The gift of giving from one hand to the other, in this case from his to Bono's. I'd like for him to give this quote to Bono: "From every human being there rises a light that reaches straight to heaven, and when two souls that are destined to be together find each other, the streams of light flow together and a single brighter light goes forth from that united being." -- Baal Shem Tov On a more personal note: I'd like to see Edge get a jacket or ring with his surname's family crest or coat of arms emblem.

Adrienne: The perfect gift for Edge is me! Why? Because I'm his biggest fan :D

Chantal Dube: After watching a day in his life on U2.com, I suggest a personal yoga instructor... Happy Birthday The Edge!

Sean Wilson: Being the self confessed workaholic that he is, I'm sure Mr The Edge will enjoy a list of new challenges to sink his teeth into (or apply his effects pedals to, that is.)   What I mean is, he has been able to literally attach a guitar sound to a theme or item so many times - these are a few I recognize:

  1. "Chiming clock" from '"11 O'clock Tick Tock"
  2. "Fighter jets" from "Bullet the Blue Sky"
  3. "Buzzing fly" from "The Fly"
  4. "Chewing gum" from "Discotheque"
  5. "Filtered moonlight" from "If You Wear That Velvet Dress"
  6. "Seagulls" from "Beautiful Day"

There are countless other songs where the mood or setting has been perfectly captured by the Edge, but the above list points to actual unique guitar sounds the Edge created to capture those scenes.   So here's a list of new sounds I'd like the Edge to have a go at:

  1. The sound of a million tweets going off simultaneously whenever he posts something on twitter.
  2. The sound of the masses exclaiming, "Oh my God!" in all the various languages, when they first set eyes on 'the claw.'
  3. The sound of 'the claw' now that I think about it.
  4. The sound of him putting on his legendary black beanie!!
  5. The sound of hundreds of @U2 readers throwing up after digesting this pointless list.

Have fun Edge -- Happy Birthday.

Oskaloosa Independent: How about a life-size bronze statue, with something like "The Edge -- when he plays and sings on stage, he does it not in a way to bring attention to himself, but to unite us in the joy of knowing God, to call for God's justice for all and to celebrate together God's unfailing love for all."
