U2 Hesitantly Promotes 'Ordinary Love' Single

@U2, December 08, 2013

U2 is in what you'd have to call a tricky situation. The band has a new single to promote as part of the marketing of a major motion picture that producers hope will earn both the film and the song several Oscar nominations.

But the subject of the film and the song, Nelson Mandela, just died at the age of 95 after a lengthy illness.

Bono addressed that Saturday during a round of interviews with international media outlets about the song, the film and Mandela himself. The interviews took place at the Mondrian Hotel in New York City.

The French TV channel Canal+ has put a few short clips of its rooftop interview with U2 online. Both Bono and Edge speak in that clip.

The Swedish paper Aftonbladet has its article online, too, which is where the subject of promoting "Ordinary Love" and Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom came up. According to the Google translation of the Swedish text, Bono says, "It's not a given to be here today to talk about a movie and a song where the reason for the film and the song has left us." He goes on to say that there was some thought about canceling the interview, but Bono felt that Mandela himself would've said, "Don't be so damn self-absorbed."

Finally, Aussie journalist Katherine Tulich tweeted about her meeting with the band, and later told Rolling Stone's Brian Hiatt that U2 is still recording the new album and has been in the studio recently until 4-5 am. (Just between us, I bet Bono told her that and I'm skeptical.)
