My Fan Year - #40
@U2,
October 30, 2005
I hereby declare November Go-See-A-U2-Tribute-Band Month. Why? Because I want to see if I wield any power. Because before I ever went to see one, I thought the very idea of a tribute band was ridiculous. Because I want to see whether anyone else gets converted as quickly as I did. That night I walked into an Irish pub and heard "Stuck in a Moment" performed by four guys in oh-so-familiar stage outfits was the night my fandom hit yet another level. All along I've been telling myself, "This U2 stuff has no more surprises for you -- you've gotten into the albums, the live shows, the bootlegs, the friendships with other fans, the drawing of innocent bystanders into the web, the teaching of two-year-old nieces to say the names of the band members when you point to their pictures..." But I was wrong. Going to see a U2 show put on by guys (or girls) who aren't U2, watching stadium-electrifying moves writ small for a club setting, hearing those arena-sized songs in a space you could fold up into your pocket...it's beautiful make-believe. The band gets to be Bono and Edge and Adam and Larry, the pub gets to be Madison Square Garden or Croke Park, everyone in the crowd gets to be a VIP. How could that not be a good time? The nascent St. Louis Area U2 Fan Club is planning a trip down Highway 44 to see "Danno" and the boys of Elevation USA play in Fenton on the 5th. I realize that might be too far for some of you to travel. So here's a non-comprehensive list of other bands out there and the gigs they have this month. I wanna hear about how they sound. Elevation (based in Canada) They have bunches of November dates listed, but they're particularly hyping their shows November 25th in Ottawa (at O'Connor's Irish Pub) and the 26th in Montreal (at the Hard Rock Café)-both post-U2 concert parties. (An excellent time to see a tribute band, by the way, is right after The Real Thing, when no one is ready to stop singing "Sunday Bloody Sunday" just yet.) NU2 (Scotland) 11th of November, The Venue in Dumfries; 19th of November: Bourbon Street in Glasgow. Station (Hungary) Again, they have a ton of shows listed (those Hungarians and their good times!): November 8 (and again on the 22nd) at the Marco Polo in Budapest, the 10th at the Rock Café in Kecskemét, the 18th at Narancs Club in Békéscsaba, and many more. I like the cute li'l train motif on their site. Unforgettable Fire (New York) They play November 12th at Rookies in Connecticut, the 18th at The Saloon in New York City (which is a pre-U2 at Madison Square Garden party), November 19th at Mulcahy's in Wantagh, New York and the 25th at Vertigo (natch) in Nyack, NY. Us4 (based in the U.K.) You can check them out on the 11th of November at the Willenhall Club in Coventry, the 12th at the New Palatine Club in Lancashire; their site lists lots more. U2 Cover (Brazil) It looks like they have tour dates in November, but my Portuguese ain't up to snuff... U2 Desire (the Czech Republic) On November 8th they'll be at the music club Fléda in Brno and on the 22nd they'll be at Vagon in Prague. Zoo Station (San Francisco) November 8th and 9th at Uptown Night Club in Oakland (both post-U2 shows) and the 11th at Britannia Arms in San Jose.
