Model Gisele helps Bono

Belfast Telegraph, January 16, 2009

Bono has enlisted the support of his supermodel friend Gisele Bundchen to give his RED campaign a fashionable edge.

Known as The Body from Brazil, she will be the covergirl for no fewer than 31 international editions of the style bible Elle, gracing magazines from France to South Africa and Singapore.

It is hoped blanket coverage will help raise awareness among more than 20 million well-heeled readers worldwide about the fight against AIDS in Africa.

The statuesque model is photographed sporting a range of RED clothing from Emporio Armani, GAP and Converse.

Gisele, who has supported RED since it was founded in 2006 by Bono and U.S. philanthropist Bobby Shriver, said that despite her glamourous career, she has seen poverty first-hand in her native Brazil.

She said: "I grew up in a country strongly affected by poverty. The face of suffering isn't an abstract thing for me. I've always said that if I could do something to help, I would.

Along with photos of Gisele, the special RED issues will also include an interview with actress Scarlett Johansson who discusses her trip to RED projects in Rwanda last year and a letter from the U2 frontman who co-founded the campaign.

Up to 50% of the profits for each RED product sold go directly to help combat AIDS in Africa. RED has so far raised more than $120m (Pounds 82m).
