How Larry Went From Pew2 to U2; Mum Wanted Me to Be Priest, Says Drummer Mullen

Sunday Mirror, November 14, 2004
By: Maeve Quigley

U2 drummer Larry Mullen has revealed his mother wanted him to be priest.

Larry said that he thought his mother Maureen -- who died in 1978 -- would be disappointed with the fact that he chose the world's biggest rock band over a career in the clergy.

Larry -- who was brought up as a Catholic and is still a committed Christian -- said: "Every Irish son is closest to their mother. She thought I'd make a priest one day. She'd be very disappointed."

Larry, 43, said the death of his mother was one of the catalysts that made him form U2 in the first place at the age of 17. He said: "When I joined the band it was like running away to the circus. My memory of early U2 is really hit and miss. Nobody was there to pick up the pieces.

"I was trying to do it myself. Impossible. There is a sense of running because you don't want to go through that loss again."

Larry said U2 had become like a second family to him and that like all families, there were sometimes arguments.

He added: "We are a tight family with all the pluses and disadvantages of that.

"But we don't have an ego problem in the band. We are all involved in the process. We all struggle together."

And bass player Adam Clayton revealed that he has recently added caffeine to his list of banned substances.

He said he has recovered from his addiction to drugs and alcohol but still prefers not to be around people who are drinking.

He said: "I don't go out very much but I am comfortable with that.

"When I was in party mode, I was out every night. Now I'm happy to watch the news and listen to music."

Adam said he is more comfortable in his own skin these days but still has unresolved issues he wants to sort out.

He said: "There is work to be done with some of my issues, but most days I move freely in the world and feel comfortable with it.

"What I've learnt about coming in to recovery is about acknowledging sensitivity and turning it down a little bit -- but that doesn't mean to say I can't feel exhilarated."
