"Rock and roll started out as dance music, but somewhere along the way it lost its hips and became rhythmically simplistic."

Greatest Story Ever Told

Hot Press, September 02, 2002

U2 have confirmed details of their Best of 1990-2000 CD and DVD which are due respectively on November 4 and December 2.

As well as gathering together all of their biggest hits from the decade, the collection features two new songs, "Electrical Storm" and "The Hands That Built America," and Mike Hedges remixes of "Discotheque," "Gone," "Numb" and "Staring at the Sun."

As with its 1980-1990 predecessor, initial quantities come with a Best Of The B-Sides bonus disc featuring: "Lady With the Spinning Head (Extended Dance Mix)," "Dirty Day (Junk Day Mix)," "Electrical Storm," "Summer Rain," "North and South of the River," "Your Blue Room," "Happiness is a Warm Gun (The Gun Mix)," "Salome (Zooromancer Mix)," "Even Better Than the Real Thing (Perfecto Mix)," "Numb (Give Me Some More Dignity Mix)," "Mysterious Ways (Solar Plexus Club Mix)," "If God Will Send His Angels (Bim Yam Mix)," "Lemon (Jeep Mix)" and "Discotheque (Hexidecimal Mix)."

If it's visceral thrills you're after, the Best of... DVD will feature promo videos of tracks from the A-Sides CD, complete with commentary by directors Wim Wenders, Kevin Godley, Stephane Sednaoui, Anton Corbijn and Jonas Akerlund. Six bonus tracks are included -- "Please," "If God Will Send His Angels," "Wild Horses," "Lemon," "Last Night on Earth" and "Mofo."

In addition, there are alternative versions of the clips made for different countries, as early cuts or to accompany different mixes. Further exclusive content includes a mini documentary, The Road to Sarajevo, filmed in the Bosnian capital in the run up to U2's historic 1997 concert and complete with performance footage.

Meanwhile, last week saw U2 debunking to the French town of Eze-Sur-Mer where Anton Corbijn was presiding over the "Electrical Storm" video shoot. A suitably lavish affair, it features actress Samantha Morton who was last seen starring alongside Tom Cruise in Minority Report.

While fans won't be able to buy it until October 21, the single's radio date has been brought forward to September 4 after a DJ friend of Bono's played it prematurely on BBC 1FM. Modern technology being what it is, MP3s of the track made it onto the net minutes later, with the reaction of fans generally very positive.

"Electrical Storm" is being made available in three formats:

CD1 -- "Electrical Storm (William Orbit Mix)" plus "Nice" and "Naughty" mixes of "New York" by KLF's Jimmy Cauty.

CD2 - "Electrical Storm" and an Elevation tour medley of "Bad," "40" and "Where the Streets Have No Name."

DVD - "Electrical Storm (William Orbit Mix)" and video, exclusive soundbites from the band and a collection of Anton Corbijn photographs.
