Freedom to Do a One-off
@U2,
March 18, 2000
So he said and so they did. Tonight's Freedom of the City award ceremony in Smithfield Civic Plaza, Dublin was capped off with a brilliant four song set performed by all four members of U2. Yes, even though the tickets said "This is not a concert" there most certainly was one.
A lucky 11,000 punters heard "All I Want Is You," "Desire," "The Sweetest Thing" and "One." Under a full moon and light Dublin mist, complete with torches reminiscent of Red Rocks, we watched as Bono, Edge, Adam, Larry and Paul McGuinness all received Waterford replicas of a joshua tree as a commemoration of this honor. There were the mandatory thank yous to friends and family and Bono honored the Dublin crowd as a "tribe of refugees," then celebrated the many benefits of freedom -- freedom to be uncool, freedom to take off the blinders, freedom to drink, and of course freedom to do a one-off. For which we are all very grateful! (Ed. note: Karen and Pamela are the co-founders of Adventures in Rock.) © 2000 @U2. All rights reserved. |
