Edge Talks About U2's Support of Music Education in Dublin Appearance
@U2,
January 22, 2013
The Edge made an appearance in Dublin Monday for a planned media event announcing new funding for Music Generation. That's the nationwide music education program that U2 first backed in 2009. As The Independent reports, Music Generation is partnering on "Developing Diversity in Music Education in Ireland" with St. Patrick's College. Paul McGuinness was also at the press event, and told the Irish Times that U2's initial funding for Music Generation came from the profits of U2's three Croke Park concerts in 2009. He said it's been U2's practice to donate its Irish concert profits "going way back." The band has traditionally kept its charity efforts quiet, but the manager may have revealed this now in light of the long-running criticism of U2's tax minimization. McGuinness also echoed Larry Mullen's recent band-related news when he told the Times, "I'm hoping that they will finish the album soon and it will be out this year." Here's an Irish TV news report on Monday's event with comments from The Edge about the music education program.
