It's funny. Sometimes when it's your turn to write OTR, there's nothing going on and you're banging your head against the wall trying to think of things to write about. And then there are times like today when it seems like everything is going on. (links to spoilers) I like doing OTR in the latter situation much better. Although ... I'm struggling with how to write this and not reveal anything for people who don't want to know.

The audio clips from today's rehearsals sound great. Thrilled with what's been posted online today. Not too surprised with that, ummm, older song that was rehearsed. I'll explain why below in a bit. And that other song also sounds good, too. After hearing those, and seeing the list of songs U2 rehearsed today, my first thought was that I need to see one of the European shows because I don't think some of those songs have a prayer of still being in the set list by the time May 2011 rolls around.

So, I opened up the U2 360 tour itinerary on U2tours.com, brought up Kayak.com in a new window, and started fishing for airfares to every city U2 is playing over the next two months. Turin, sadly, was immediately ruled out: $3,000 roundtrip. Most other cities were $2,000 or higher. The winner? Paris! Roundtrip for just under $1,100 from my local airport. Still too spendy, though, so I'll have to wait until 2011. Unless I can find a Sugar Momma or someone else to fund my way. ;-)

Tassoula came to visit Casa McGee last weekend -- she and my wife are huge fans of the Mad Men TV show, so they wanted to watch the season opener together. We also watched the U2 360 at the Rose Bowl DVD while she was in town, and it got me started thinking about what the new tour will look like and what'll be different. Here's the short list I came up with (before today's rehearsal spoilers):

  • "Breathe" and "The Unforgettable Fire" will not make the cut for the new tour
  • "Fez/Being Born" will be played, and maybe "Stand Up Comedy" later in the tour - but not at first
  • Doubt that "White as Snow" or "Cedars of Lebanon" will be played because they're too mellow
  • Songs like "Bullet the Blue Sky" and "Gone" might show up because U2 doesn't have a ton of heavy, stadium-sized rock songs to choose from and those two let the band cut loose loudly.
  • The encore will change; they'll still play "Ultraviolet" and "Moment of Surrender" (not sure about "With or Without You") but elsewhere in the set.

That's what I came up with. Caravox posted some of her questions/guesses on our blog and a lot of people have chimed in with their thoughts in the comments; feel free to join them.

When U2 play in Athens in early September, they're also rumored to be planning some time in a swanky recording studio on the island of Santorini. The rumor started with a report in an entertainment/celebrity paper called Espresso, and quickly spread as fact across Greek blogs. The place is called Black Rock Studios, and you can see some photos here and then tell me if you think anyone actually gets any real work done there. ? Quite a long way from Windmill Lane....

Related: A fan posted in our forum last week saying that he'd heard a bunch of new U2 songs coming from Bono's house in the south of France. Here's that thread.

And finally ... happy 10th birthday to U2log.com! Caroline took a little trip down memory lane in that post I'm linking to, and it'll probably jog some memories for you, too. I remember the first time I came across U2log.com -- I didn't know what a blog was, and I was like, Log? Why on earth is it called U2log? But much more than that, I was just glad that Caroline had started a web site. I'd met her briefly at a Wire gathering before one of the PopMart Dublin shows, and before that I knew her as one of the smartest/keenest (most keen?) fans online. As I said on Twitter, it's been 10 years of making the Internet a better place for U2 fans. Thanks, Caroline, and all involved over the years with U2log.com.

See you soon!
