Column: off the record...,vol. 9-400
@U2,
March 07, 2010
This is the 400th OTR column we've published. Amazing. Thanks for reading all these years. I was almost certain that @U2 visits the Joshua Tree was going to be nominated for an Oscar tonight, maybe in the Best Short Film category or something similar? But no. It's been a rough year for U2, @U2, and awards. ;-) So, if Brian Eno is committed to working on the new Coldplay album this year, not to mention curating the Brighton Festival in May, what are the chances he's available to help U2 get out a new album before the 360 tour resumes in June? Unlikely, I'd say. I bumped into an @U2 reader last week at a marketing conference and, while we were chatting about the band's plans, I said the most likely scenario is that we get some kind of digital-only release before the tour. Maybe just a couple songs, something like the "Live from the Brooklyn Bridge" EP that U2 put out on iTunes a few years ago? That seems possible to me. I suppose we're all somewhat obligated to weigh in on U2's opening acts, right? Here's my take:
That's my two cents. None of us buys tickets for the opening acts, anyway, so it's nothing to get worked up about, is it? I've been working out and losing weight since the start of the year, and it's all going well so far. But spending 45 minutes on a treadmill 3-4 times per week is pretty boring. So I'm trying to come up with a great iPod playlist for my workouts. And I'm trying to find some good U2 songs to include. So far I only have the live (Wide Awake in America) version of "Bad" and the live version (from Milan) of "Original of the Species." Neither is a great workout song, but they're both passable. We have a thread in our forum about working out and U2, but it's nigh on impossible to get through the near-900 posts in there now to figure out what songs other fans are recommending. So, either I'll keep struggling and finding my own way, or someone who's familiar with that thread will read this and volunteer to post some kind of brief summary for the rest of us. (hint, hint) Have you ever heard of Lala.com? It's one of my new favorite web sites. You can listen to albums in their entirety once for free. I'm digging a live Pretenders album right now. Listened to the Rolling Stones' Shine A Light and the new Lifehouse albums earlier today. All fo' fwee. Too cool. Speaking of Lala.com, that's where I also checked out the latest 30 Seconds To Mars album a few weeks ago. And as I was doing so, the number of U2 references really shocked me. Consider this:
Srsly, what's up with that? And finally, thanks to Ernesto for letting us know that U2 appears three times on this web site about the world's saddest songs. See you soon. (c) @U2, 2010. |
