Column: off the record..., vol. 9-374
@U2,
September 06, 2009
Tim C., a friend of ours in Chicago, emailed over the weekend to let us know that U2's huge fleet of trucks is already on site and The Claw is being built. Haven't seen any photos around the Interwebz yet, though. If you have, please let us know. I've seen lots of discussion in the past couple weeks -- on email lists and in our forum, among other places -- about what the second leg of the U2 360 Tour might be like, and how much it'll change from the first leg. And I kinda just want to say, "This is U2 we're dealing with. Lots of changes would be great, but I wouldn't expect it." Based on the earlier news reports, we can expect "Your Blue Room" to be added to the setlist. Willie Williams has mentioned that he pushed for songs like "October" and "White As Snow" to be played, and he's also talked about "Drowning Man" in a couple of his U2.com diary entries. But I think past behavior is usually a good predictor of future behavior, and U2 hasn't typically made a ton of changes to the setlist when they start the second leg of their recent tours. The June 20, 2005, setlist was awfully close to the first leg of the Vertigo Tour. The July 6, 2001, setlist wasn't too different from the first leg of the Elevation Tour. And if you go back to the last stadium tour, the July 18, 1997, setlist was pretty much an exact copy of the last show of PopMart's first leg. I'd like to think they'll want to change things up a bit more next weekend in Chicago, and I sure hope they do, but I think it's more likely that setlist changes will be worked in slowly over the next seven weeks. If you're heading to the Tampa show on October 9, look forward to a unique, intergalactic moment during the show. Guy Laliberte, a friend of the band who founded Cirque du Soleil, is planning a live event on that date while he's visiting the International Space Station. According to this story, Laliberte named U2 as one of the participants in the 14-city event -- and named Tampa as one of the locations, too. The event will promote access to clean water and the need to preserve Earth's water resources. U2log.com has more about the event in this post. I shared this link on Twitter a few days ago: Sony to throw its weight behind 3D TV. It says that Sony is planning to sell 3D TVs globally by the end of 2010. There's no mention of U2 in there, but you can't help thinking about seeing U2 3D at home, right? Jason W. sent us a link to this News.com article, which also talks about 3D televison, and does include a brief U2 mention:
If there are competing standards (think VHS vs. Beta and Blu-Ray vs HD DVD), I doubt we'll see a home version of U2 3D for another 3-4 years or so, or whenever it all gets sorted out. (That's all the more reason to join us next month for a showing of U2 3D with Neil McCormick after U2 - The Hype & The Feedback.) And finally ... if you were at any of the Croke Parks gigs in July, here's a pretty cool stadium map with YouTube links to videos taken at the shows.
See you next time! (c) @U2, 2009.
